What is the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS)?

The RTS uses a radio signal to instruct older electricity meters when to switch between peak and off-peak rates. Some traditional multi-rate meters use RTS as it supports those using electricity for heating and hot water. This includes electric storage systems, panel heaters and immersion heaters in water tanks.

The RTS commenced in the 1980s and is managed by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). RTS is now at the end of its operational life as the equipment to deliver the radio signal is too old to support any more.

The RTS switch off

On 30 June 2025, the BBC started a phased area-by-area switch off of the mast that controls when RTS meters switch between peak and off-peak times. The RTS switch off is an industry driven change. Following the mast switch offs, RTS meters may not be able to switch between rates. For example, if your premises has a meter with day and a night rates, the meter could stay on the higher rate all the time which means you may be charged higher than usual. This change could also affect the ability to access and control hot water and heating systems. As such, it’s important that all customers with an RTS meter exchange their meter.

We’re offering all customers with an RTS meter a replacement meter that will send their meter readings automatically at no additional cost.

How do I know if I have an RTS meter?

We’ve contacted all our RTS customers several times through email, letter, and via the My Drax Energy portal (if customers have portal access). If you’ve received a message from us but haven’t arranged to switch your meter yet please contact us as soon as possible.

Exchanging your meter

An advanced meter (AMR) or smart meter will give you the same functionality as your RTS meter. You’ll still be able to access your hot water and heating systems, and switch between peak and off peak rates.

As an added benefit, these meters will send us your meter readings automatically, and you’ll be able to see a more detailed analysis of your energy usage on the My Drax Energy portal. To request access or learn more about the portal, visit energy.drax.com/my-drax-energy-portal/.

If you work with a third party and want them to access the portal, send us a letter of authority. Find out how at energy.drax.com/support/letters-of-authority/.

You can find out more about smart meters on our smart meter page.
