BSUoS fixed tariffs to fall through 2026
On 29 December 2025, the National Energy System Operator (NESO) published the final Balancing Services Use of System (BSUoS) charges for 2026-27. The charges are £13.74/MWh for Fixed Tariff 7 (April to September 2026) and £12.49/MWh for Fixed Tariff 8 (October 2026 to March 2027).
The following graph outlines how these final figures compare to the 2025-26 BSUoS tariffs, and to the initial and draft tariffs published in June and September respectively. While both of the final tariffs are markedly lower than the current Tariff 6 (£15.69/MWh), the summer 2026 Tariff 7 (£13.74/MWh) is significantly higher than last year’s Tariff 5 (£10.74/MWh).

As the graph shows, the forecasts have gradually normalised over time, with the Fixed Tariff 7 forecast reducing while the Fixed Tariff 8 forecast has increased. NESO gives two main explanations for much of the movement in the final tariffs. The first is an increase in forecast balancing costs in Fixed Tariff 8; the second, an overall reduction in internal costs for the year. Other factors include an over-recovery adjustment and changes to forecast chargeable BSUoS volumes.
Next steps
NESO will host a webinar exploring the final tariffs in more detail on 15 January 2026.
Fixed Tariff 7 will come into effect from 1 April 2026 and Fixed Tariff 8 will apply from 1 October 2026. NESO will issue the initial forecasts for Fixed Tariff 9 and 10 in June 2026.
