How Drax is delivering energy security in uncertain times

How is Drax helping keep the lights on in the UK?
Drax is the biggest generator of renewable power in the UK, producing 12% of the country’s renewable electricity - enough for over 5 million households. This comes from sustainable biomass, from our power station in North Yorkshire, and hydro power stations in South-West Scotland.
Drax’s generating assets are playing a critical role providing stability and security to the UK power system at a time when the war in Ukraine has put the market under considerable pressure.
Can we still be sustainable in times of high energy demand?
Many renewable energy sources are intermittent, which mean they’re not continuous or steady sources. When the wind isn’t blowing and the sun isn’t shining, we need to look to other sources of power.
Drax’s sustainable biomass is dispatchable, which means it’s a power source that can be produced on demand according to market needs.
At Drax, we’re optimising our biomass generation to ensure we can generate more renewable power when the country needs it the most this winter. This will help the UK to keep aiming for its target of net zero by 2050. We’re also using our pumped storage hydro stations to reinforce the UK’s renewable energy mix.
Is there a risk of blackouts?
In the unlikely event of blackouts or forced load-shedding (a way of distributing demand for power), the Government will work with National Grid and local Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) to manage the country’s power.
At the request of the UK Government, Drax has agreed to delay the planned closure of its two coal-fired units and help bolster the UK’s energy security this winter.
And, as well as optimising our biomass generation to ensure we can generate more renewable power, we’re expecting to produce additional support from pumped storage hydro at Cruachan Power Station.
